System Learning

K–12 OPERATING SYSTEM INSTITUTE

Every Community Has an Operating System. Few Intentionally Steward It.

You can't intentionally update what you don't yet understand.

The K–12 Operating System Institute introduces another way of understanding the largely invisible operating system supporting students and the adults who serve them.

Through an interdisciplinary learning experience, you'll develop a shared language, practical mental models, and new perspectives for understanding how the operating system influences leadership, governance, teaching, learning, student support, organizational performance, and long-term improvement.

Who Should Participate

The Institute is designed for leaders responsible for shaping the future of their organizations and communities.

Participants may include:

  • Superintendents and cabinet members
  • School board members
  • Labor partner representatives
  • Nonprofit executives
  • Higher education leaders
  • Government leaders
  • Philanthropic organizations
  • Workforce and community partners
  • Other leaders interested in organizational modernization

Why Participate?

Two people holding a plant and an Open sign in a green plant store.

Communities invest significant time improving programs, services, and initiatives. Far less time is spent understanding the operating system that enables those efforts to function consistently, adapt over time, and achieve their intended impact.

The Institute provides a practical framework for recognizing the operating system, understanding its ongoing responsibilities, and exploring how it influences the experiences of students, staff, families, and community partners.

What You'll Gain

Participants will:

  • Recognize the operating system supporting your community.
  • Develop a shared language for discussing operating system modernization.
  • Explore interdisciplinary perspectives that strengthen systems thinking.
  • Understand the operating system's ongoing responsibilities and their influence on organizational performance.
  • Identify opportunities to intentionally strengthen and modernize your operating system over time.

What to Expect

The Institute is an executive learning experience combining interdisciplinary research, facilitated discussion, practical examples, organizational reflection, and collaborative learning.

Participants leave with a practical understanding of the Public K–12 Operating System, a shared vocabulary for discussing modernization, and new ways of understanding the systems that support students and the adults who serve them.

Apply Today

The operating system is one of the most influential yet least understood aspects of public education.

The Institute invites you to see it differently, not as another initiative to manage, but as an enduring organizational capability that can be intentionally examined, modernized, and stewarded over time.
